When we are looking for love, the only way the world can manifest it is by having hope and being positive. Then shall love find you when you least expect it. All those words are great for some but what about the ones who struggle to keep it positive, who struggle to fit in with society; to be noticed, and those who are possibly in their head with nothing but doubt? We are not perfect, we are flawed beings who only want to be loved when we can not love ourselves. To be noticed, to be accepted by those who are above us and to have purpose in someone's life.
As we stand in the mirror and look at ourselves all we see is a dark aura like the devil. This aura seems so real, it has taken shape and follows you everywhere. It stands behind you and tells you in your ear… “don’t put that eyeliner on, it's not for you”... “really those jeans won’t make any man want you”.
All those whispers enter your head and you believe them. So you stand forever in the mirror wondering what to wear or how to look; and then hating everything you try on. You see all those perfect people on TV and on the streets who walk and talk with confidence and they make you feel like a ghost. You shake your head and change into something undesirable but comfortable. You try to tell yourself, “you look good in anything” as you walk out the door with the shadow right behind you.
All down the street there are storefront windows and your reflection is shown as you walk. The shadow has a way of keeping up with you and continuing to whisper things in your ear.
“Look at all these people, walking and talking with friends and lovers, you will never have that because you can hardly keep anyones attention.”
“Ohh, look at that couple over there. That woman is so confident and strong, you can never be that.”
You bow your head down, trying to hold back tears as you finally reach a brick wall. You breathe only to see a puddle under you. The shadow is back and you try to run, but a loose lace stops you. So you bend down to tie it and the shadow smiles. Another girl walks past you and when you try to talk to her to distract your mind, you freeze from nerves.
“Ha, did you really think you had the confidence to make a friend? To actually step out of your box and be without me? No one wants you…”
You dash off running to a nearby park bridge. That was a mistake, the water shows you and sees what a mess you are. Your hair isn’t done, your face is naked, and your clothes are a cry for help. The shadow was right. No one wants you, no one will ever accept you especially when you can’t accept yourself. All the strength you have is gone. As tears flow down your face, you can’t help but scream into the air. You feel a pressure on your shoulder and see your shadow.
It pulls you in for a hug and you embrace it. The darkness makes you want to submit to agree that all this evil doubt is true. You squeeze it’s back as the sun gleams on your face. A memory hits you and you remember the love of your mother and how she loved you no matter what. Through your flaws you were able to make some friends and even though they are no longer with you, they left because of ‘life’ not ‘you’. They never hated you and if you could make friends then, you can make friends now.
Push!
“YOU CANNOT ESCAPE ME!” it screams as you push it over the bridge. You watch your outer shelf fall to their death.
“Ah!” You awake from a dream and look around with relief. You get dressed in something that fits your body just right. You look over at your makeup mirror and take a breath. You look into it and for a minute you see your face and all those bad thoughts come back. You close your eyes and take a slow breath. You open them and say to yourself…
“We are all flawed and want nothing more than to be loved and happy, but that first comes from within. Even if we struggle to remember that, I will always tell myself I am beautiful and an amazing person.” she expressed.
Her reflection smiles and nods as the once dark shadow becomes a ray of light filled with hope.
There is always a light at the end of the tunnel.
